LI Students Among Winners in the 2016 NYS Science Congress

13 Long Island students were among the winners of the 2016 New York State Science Congress.  60 students from across the state competed at the event, held June 4th at the University of Buffalo, presenting their projects in poster format.

Students qualified for the event, hosted by the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), by competing at the Long Island Science Congress earlier this year and winning first or second place.

 

Lexus Eco Challenge Winners

The Lexus Eco Challenge, sponsored by Scholastic, saw two area teams who qualified for the national finals in the Air & Climate Change Challenge.  The team from Jericho, 'Methane X,' studied the impact of methane and presented research about the benefits of composting.  Team 'ELLI' (Eat Local Long Island), from Locust Valley sought to educate their community about reducing their carbon footprint, in part by taking a food-to-table approach in the school's cafeteria and at local restaurants.

 

LI High Schools Make the Grade

U.S. News & World Report issued its National Rankings of Best High Schools with Jericho High School leading the Long Island schools named, ranking 13th in New York and 91st nationally.  Other Long Island schools that made the state's top twenty were: South Side High School, Rockville Centre (15th), Garden City High School (18th) and Great Neck South High School (19th).  A total of 12 area schools were in the top 50 schools in New York.

 

LI Regional Envirothon Winners

Sponsored by Covanta, the LI Regional Envirothon is an annual competition that looks to engage the next generation of environmental stewards.  The competition requires five member teams to participate in outdoor challenges as well as take written exams.  Students were also required to give presentations on this year's theme: invasive species.

The Nassau and Suffolk county winners of the 18th annual event were Great Neck South High School and Sachem North High School respectively.  Next year's event will take place April 25, 2017 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

 

WAC Lighting Invitational Science Fair

Great Neck High School North hosted the 2016 WAC Lighting Invitationl Science Fair where over 400 students from across the Island came to present their research projects.  Entry categories ranged from Computer Science & Modeling to Biology and Chemistry.  Visit WAC Lighting's website to view the results.
