17th Annual SBPLI Regional FIRST Robotics Competition

Students from 51 area high schools met at Hofstra University to pit their robots against each other in the 17th Annual SBPLI Regional FIRST Robotics Competition with this year's theme being: 'FIRST Stronghold.'  On a castle-style field, the teams tried to breach their opponent's defenses, shooting boulders through goals to score points.

Three teams: Hurricane Floyd (Mastic Beach), Sachem Aftershock (Lake Ronkonkoma) and TEAM R.I.C.E. (Southold) came out on top and will advance to compete in St. Louis, April 27 - 30 at the FIRST Robotics Championship.  Seaford High School senior, Nick Liuzzi was also named MVP of the competition - the event's highest individual honor.

 

FIRST® Competition Held in Brooklyn

Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, hosted a FIRST® LEGO League tournament February 6, with 12 teams qualifying for the Championship event being held at the Jacob Javits Center on Saturday, March 12. Teams from across New York City built their LEGO robots based on this year's theme of trash and recycling, presenting out of the box solutions to real world problems with waste.

The 16th Anniversary New York City FIRST® Competition and ExpoFIRST® Competition and Expo will run from March 11 through March 13.

MakerSpace Innovation Center

West Hempstead middle schoolers are enjoying learning about 3D Technologies at their new MakerSpace Innovation Center.  Using 3D pens, Simple Machine stations and other resources, the students area ble to tap into their creative sides, building models and finding ways to repurpose discarded materials.

 

New STEM Center Opens

Massapequa is the proud new home of the Boy Scouts of America's first permanent STEM Education Center and Laboratory.  The three story building houses classrooms where children ages seven and up can learn about Sciecne, Technology, Engineering and Math, taught by volunteers working in those fields.  The programs are open not only to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, but children in the community as well.

 

"New Media Academy" at Baldwin High School

Thanks to a new partnership with Molloy College, Baldwin High School is developing a curriculum for a "New Media Academy."  Renovations are underway at the school, funded in part by a New York Regional Economic Development Council Grant, and will begin with the 2016 - 2017 school year.
