Intimidated by Computer Science and Programming? TechPrep, an initiative by Facebook (and supported by McKinsey & Company), seeks to help parents, guardians and students to better understand these fields and encourage individuals from all backgrounds to pursue careers in technology.

The website offers visitors seven categories to choose from (Recommended, Tinker & toys, Games, Reference Materials, Live and In-person Instruction, College, Career Prep & Scholarships and Communities and Events) and based on the student's age and experience (which you select) they will provide a list of websites and other resources.  You'll find choices that range from books on programming and toys to online courses and games.

 

ACE Mentor Program

The ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Mentor Program, begun in 1994, now has affiliates in over 40 states across the country.  Mentoring companies team up with high school students who are interested in design and construction to help prepare them for careers in these fields.

Over the course of a year, the teams plan and design projects that addrees real world issues.  The students also have opportunities to visit construction sites and completed buildings to learn what is necessary to create them.

2016 World Science Festival

The 2016 World Science Festival kicks off June 1st in New York City. The annual, week-long event is in its 9th year and continues to bring great minds in science together to present live and digital programs on scientific discoveries for a general audience.  With over 50 events scheduled, there is something for everyone.  Be an apprentice to a biochemist or a baker (just two of the many apprentice choices!), learn about synthetic biology, pioneers in science, star gazing or gravitational waves.  Visit the Festival's website for the full list of events.

 

Activities for Summer 2016

Summer’s right around the corner!  Looking for something fun to do?  We’ve found quite a few STEM/STEAM themed programs:

The Cradle of Aviation Museum's STEM & Space Summer Camp programs are five days and include: Hardware Engineering, MinecraftEDU and Space Camp.

The Dolan DNA Learning Center Summer Camp offers three locations (Cold Spring Harbor, Lake Success and East Harlem) with choices that include: World of Enzymes, Backyard Barcoding and Genome Science.

Hofstra Summer Camps at Hofstra University offers 3D Printing and Animations, Structural Engineering and Earthquakes and Structures along with many other activities to choose from.

Extreme STEAM Science Kids Summer Camp offers four two week sessions, each with its own theme. Campers will learn scientific skills and then be given the opportunity to work in teams applying those skills.

The Queens Botanical Garden has Garden Programs for Kids where they can conduct science experiments and explore concepts of ecological balance, sustainability and conservation.

Girls Incorporated of Long Island is offering two summer camp programs: Engineering for Science and Astrophysics, both of which will take place at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

The Long Island Science Center has a Science Camp for children entering 1st – 4th grades with topics covering Chemistry, Biology and more.

Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum's Camp Intrepid 2016 has weekly sessions with activities that focus on space, planes, inventions and more.

The Usdan Center for the Creative & Performing Arts will offer Nature, Ecology & Design and Architecture Design, Video Game Art and Design sessions among others at its camp this year.

Friends Academy Summer Camp offers a variety of courses that include Marine Science, Digital Arts and Robotics.

Portledge School's Summer Adventures offers a wide variety of courses ranging from Future Scientist Camp, Physics Sport Challenge, Sea Perch Robotics Building and 3D Modeling Camp.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is offering Summer Sundays during the month of July with free summer tours, special activities and the chance to talk to researchers.

American Museum of Natural History Exhibits

Two exhibits currently at the American Museum of Natural History are:

Dark Universe at the Hayden Planetarium Space Show which takes visitors on a trip through the universe's history, highlighting discoveries made and exploring new frontiers and breakthroughs as we continue to learn about the cosmos.

The Secret World Inside You features interactive exhibits and live presentations as it looks at the human microbiome and how it relates to and impacts our health.
