STEM Jobs appreciates the challenges that teachers face trying to find effective STEM lesson plans.  In an effort to help, they’ve compiled five of the best sources for free STEM lesson plans, NASA for Educators and the Environmental Protection Agency, among them.

Educators can participate in free DNA barcoding workshops this summer, Monday - Friday from 9:30AM - 3:30PM.  They can then go back to their schools and organize student research teams (grades 9-12) who will submit research proposals that will study the ecology and biodiversity found on Long Island.

 

Target Grants

The Target Corporation offers several grants for educators.  One supports arts and reading in the schools (up to $2,000), helping to fund activities and presentations and a second for field trips (up to $700).  Area teacher, Millie Joyce from Garden City's Locust School, recently received her fifth consecutive Target Field Trip Grant which will be used to take of their first grade students to the Queens Zoo.

2015 NIST Summer Institute

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will be holding its 2015 Summer Institute for Middle School Science Teachers July 6-17.  Participating teachers will benefit from hands-on activities, tours, visits with NIST scientists and engineers as well as lectures, resulting in new knowledge they can bring back to the classroom along with materials to incorporate into their lesson plans.  Applications must be subnmitted through your school district, as individual applications will not be accepted.  All submissions are due by March 13, 2015.

 

2015 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators Program

Calling all K-12 Educators who are actively using digital media and technology in their classrooms!  PBS is conducting its third annual Digital Innovators Program.  Teachers are invited to submit a short video (1-2 minutes) that highlights the creative ways they are incorporating technology into the classroom.  PBS will choose the top 100 educators nationwide to receive year-long professional devleopment opportunities.  30 of these individuals will also receive a three-day, all expenses paid trip to Philadelphia, PA for the PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators Program and ISTE Conference being held in June 2015.
